New School Year Jitters

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Welcome to the new school year! As your principal, I am thrilled to welcome our rising middle schoolers to our campus. This transition is an exciting milestone, but it also brings a wave of changes for both you and your child. One common challenge students face early on is adjusting to their new daily schedule—especially when they discover they are not in the same classes as their closest friends 

It is completely normal for students to feel anxious or disappointed about this. However, this situation is also a wonderful opportunity for them to build resilience, independence, and new social skills.

Here are a few practical ways you can help your child navigate this transition at home:

• Validate Their Feelings: Acknowledge their disappointment without trying to "fix" it immediately. Let them know it is okay to miss their friends.

• Encourage New Connections: Remind them that every seating chart is a chance to make a new connection. Practice simple, low-pressure conversation starters together. “Did you go to Silver Hill?”  “Do you remember the teacher’s name?”  “What time does this class end?”  “I like your backpack.”

• Focus on Out-of-Class Time: Remind your child that they can still sit together at lunch, hang out at recess, or join the same after-school clubs.

• Establish Predictable Routines: Middle school requires more organization. Help them practice opening combination locks, organizing their binder, and setting up a quiet homework space to build their confidence.

• Keep Home a Safe Harbor: Ask open-ended questions at the end of the day, focusing on both the highlights and the challenges. Your steady support is their strongest anchor.
